Insulating your loft is one of the best ways to cutting your fuel bills, it's easy to do and cost effective. I recommend a minimum of 200mm or 8 inches for best insulating results.

Tools and Equipment Needed

No special tools or equipment is needed but you'll need to wear some old clothes, a face mask and some goggles and some gloves (especially if you're home has old style fireplaces because the loft will no doubt be covered in a layer of soot).

I'd recommend wearing a long sleeved t-shirt too, which helps keep the fibres from the loft insulation off your forearms.

An old serrated kitchen knife comes in handy for cutting the insulation.

Laying the loft insulation

Firstly carry your loft insulation packs into the loft, don't open them before they are in the loft, they fluff out as soon as you open the pack and you won't be able to get them through your loft hatch once opened.

Laying is easy, open the packs and separate the pre-cut rolls then start unrolling from one end of the joist, pushing the insulation between the joist as you go.

Don't forget to cut a piece of insulation for the top of the loft hatch too.

It's easy to install but here are a few don'ts.

  • Don't lay the insulation right into the eaves, leave a gap to allow air flow into an out of the loft.
  • Don't lay insulation beneath a cold water tank, the warmth from the room below will help ensure the cold water tank doesn't freeze during the winter month.
  • Don't lay loft insulation over any electrical wires, let the wires lay over the top of the insulation or fix them to the joists above the line of the insulation if possible.
